It's undeniable that abortion presents a moral dilemma. But passing laws that dictate a women's medical decisions and infringe on her privacy and bodily autonomy is incompatible with the American ideals of autonomy, freedom, and privacy. Not to mention that enforcement would require monitoring of doctors, consultations, and possibly surveillance of private communications and travel. It's ironic that conservatives, who are usually ferocious about protecting individual rights, are the source of these new laws.
Progressive policies focus on proven methods to reduce unwanted pregnancies and support for those who choose to carry them to term rather than punitive legislation that will only serve to drive the practice underground.
