On the September 17th 1787, the last day of the Constitutional Convention, Elizbeth Powell of Maryland asked Benjamín Franklin if we have a monarchy or a republic. He answered "A republic, if we can keep it". At the time the concept of a government "of, by, and for the people" was considered revolutionary and not at all certain to succeed. Since then our country has survived may challenges, including a civil war, but until recently the will of the voters hasn't been challenged.
